How the HRA Exemption Works

Under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act, the exempt portion of your HRA is the minimum of the following three amounts:

    • Actual Rent Paid minus 10% of Salary. received from your employer
    • 50% of Salary (for those living in Metro cities) or 40% of Salary (for Non-Metro cities).
    • Actual Rent Paid minus 10% of Salary

      Critical Guidelines for 2026

      • PAN of Landlord :
        If your total rent paid during the year exceeds ₹1,00,000, you must provide your landlord’s PAN to claim the HRA exemption.

      • New Tax Regime :
